The client

Leading Biotechnology Company

Our client is a market-leading biotechnology company headquartered in the UK that sells to markets globally. They have a proven track record of delivering disruptive technologies to the markets that they serve and are focused on automation and increasing ease of use through the provision of more cost effective solutions. Our clients’ technologies are used by research scientists worldwide as well as to support ‘real-life’ decision making in healthcare, industry and other applied settings.

Key Outcomes

We helped our client mobilise their workloads to the Cloud using the AWS MAP, resulting in:

  • Enablement Mobilisation of key software development tooling ahead of on-premise hardware retirement
  • Acceleration Reduced deployment time through infrastructure code automation
  • Optimisation Increased reliability and reduced operational overhead
The Challenge

A lack of physical rack space was hindering our client’s scalability

Our client hosts a number of critical software development services at their own on-premise data centre, but are constrained by the lack of physical rack space available and the rate this infrastructure can be refreshed.

They were looking to move a number of these services out of their data centre into the Cloud, to take advantage of the on-demand nature of Cloud infrastructure and its scaling capabilities, but needed a partner to help them achieve the migration.

THE SOLUTION

Leveraging the AWS Migration Acceleration Programme for a seamless staging to the Cloud

We have been working with this client for a number of years, supporting them on a wide range of technical and Cloud projects.

As an AWS partner, we have hands-on platform engineering and migration expertise, and under the umbrella of the AWS Migration Acceleration Programme (MAP), a framework of support for AWS partners to assist customers in moving workloads to the Cloud, we began helping our client with their on-premises migration.

We first performed an AWS MAP Assess exercise, working with the client to assess the state of their current on-premises services and infrastructure. We catalogued the on-premise services, sized them from a compute and storage perspective for the Cloud, estimated costs to run in AWS, and finally, proposed a migration pathway.

We then performed the MAP Mobilise phase, successfully establishing these services in the Cloud through automation and infrastructure as code, and prepared the pathway to perform the migrations.

The Results

Scalability and cost efficiency through AWS migration

By mobilising key software development tooling ahead of the on-premise hardware retirement, our client has reduced their required up-front spend, and the elastic scalability of Cloud compute has also resulted in reduced waiting times to deploy applications.

For example, where the client was previously limited to 20 full-time on-premise continuous integration runners, deployments can now execute on a provisioned, ad-hoc, on-demand basis, without limits.

The migration to AWS provides increased reliability for our client, as well as a reduced operational overhead for all applications through automation, by utilising Cloud managed services, deployed via infrastructure as code.

Working in parallel with our client’s Cloud engineering team, we provided the technical, platform engineering capacity and uplift they were looking for, and have accelerated their Cloud journey, enabling them to continue driving innovation and efficiencies going forward.
